Lifegard Filter socks have a superior waste and debris trapping capability in your tank. Very simple and easy plug and play installation method allows you to easily service your tanks with higher frequency because of the efficient installation process in the filter. Lifegard filter allows cleaning to the level of 100 to 200 micron with the filter sock.
Lifegard filter sock is designed to trap debris before it reaches your biological filtration. Regular cleaning prevents clogging, improves water flow, and helps maintain good water quality.
Best Practices
Keep 3–6 spare socks on hand and rotate them.
How Often to Clean:
· Heavily stocked aquariums: Every 2–4 days
· Average freshwater or reef aquariums: Every 3–7 days
· Lightly stocked systems: Weekly or as needed
Clean the sock when you notice:
· Reduced water flow
· Water backing up around the filter sock
· Excessive debris accumulation
Step-by-Step Cleaning
1. Remove the Filter Sock
Turn off the return pump if necessary.
Carefully remove the sock to avoid releasing trapped debris back into the sump or aquarium.
2. Rinse Out Debris
Turn the sock inside out. Use a strong stream of water from a hose or utility sink to remove trapped waste.
3. Deep Clean
Choose one of these methods:
Bleach Method (most effective)
Soak in a solution of approximately 1-part unscented bleach to 10-parts water for several hours or overnight.
Rinse thoroughly.
Allow the sock to air dry completely in full sun for 24–48 hours. Chlorine dissipates as it dries in full sunlight.
Hydrogen Peroxide Method (for experts only)
Soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide for several hours.
Rinse thoroughly.
Air dry completely.
Washing Machine Method (works but can damage the sock)
Wash only filter socks (no clothing).
Use hot water.
Do not use detergent, fabric softener, or scented additives.
Run an extra rinse cycle.
Air dry completely before reusing.
4. Inspect for Wear
Replace the sock if you notice:
Torn seams
Frayed fabric
Stretched filter material
Persistent clogging despite cleaning
Avoid leaving dirty sock in place for extended periods, as trapped waste can break down and release nutrients back into the water
