Description:

Cholla Wood

Cholla Driftwood is the naturally dried skeleton of the Cholla cactus and is especially popular in shrimp aquariums. Its hollow, porous structure creates ideal hiding spots for shrimp while encouraging biofilm growth—an important natural food source for shrimp and fry. It also serves as a great base for attaching mosses, Marimo balls, Bucephalandra, Anubias, and other aquatic plants, helping you create the look of a natural, submerged log.

As with most natural driftwood, Cholla may release tannins that can lightly tint the water yellow or brown. This is harmless and will gradually diminish over time. Boiling the wood beforehand can help reduce initial tannin release.

Because this is a natural product, each piece will vary slightly in shape and texture. Sections are typically cut to approximately 6 inches long and 1.5–2 inches in diameter.

Please Note:

  • Best suited for freshwater shrimp and small fry. Larger or inquisitive fish (such as bettas) may attempt to swim through the openings and could become stuck. Consider your livestock carefully before use.
  • Rinse thoroughly prior to adding to an established aquarium. Boiling for 1–2 hours is recommended if you wish to minimize tannins before placement.

Sizes Available:

Cholla Wood -S- 10" - 12"

Cholla Wood -M- 12" - 18"

Cholla Wood -L- 8" - 10"

As a natural product, each piece will vary slightly in size and shape (± a few inches).

This wood is buoyant and must be thoroughly soaked before it will reliably sink.

Photos shown are representative examples—every piece is unique in form and detail.
